Sometimes,

Gratitude Isn't Enough

Social Toxicities Weigh Heavy.
And sometimes they intersect.
Watch for it...

...in these examples.

Multiple forms of maltreatment considered;

some illustrated by ecologically valid profanity.

Maltreatment: Not Just for Kids

Keepin it Simple, while Acknowledging it's So Much More Complex

PHYSICAL ABUSE

We grew up with spanking, wooden spoons, belts, switches, and so much more.

They grow up with child protective services, battered women's shelters, and so much more.

Others grow up getting beaten up by kids at school, in the neighborhood, by their romantic partners, by the police, and so much more.

SEXUAL ABUSE

We grew up not being allowed to wear make-up, style our hair, or go to our uncle's house alone.

They grow up with bras being snapped, pants being yanked down, asses being grabbed, thighs being groped...

Others have ancestors who were raped, and that's why they're here.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE

"What're you, stupid?!"

"You little piece of shit!"

"What a cunt!"

"Fucking faggot!"

"I'll turn you straight!"

(Did you catch the intersectionality on that last one? This one's not just psychological.)

NEGLECT

Physical: No winter jacket, *despite the money in the bank.

Medical: No doctor, *even though there's insurance.

Psychological: Emotionally unresponsive, but physically present.

Sexual meets Educational: Lack of education about human anatomy, sex, sexuality, or boundaries.

*No jacket or doctor's visit due to insufficient income and insurance?

Society neglecting those whose lives are less valued.

JUST GETTING WARMED UP...

Being grateful doesn't fix the harm caused

by maltreatment

and other social determinants of health.

So what do we DO

about all of "IT" at all of these intersections?

Let's start with more learning, and then careful conversation. We're setting the stage.
