Social Determinants...Plural...Not Just One Determinant of Our Health

*Caution Warranted: genitalia, profanity, and racial slurs discussed, below.

Evidence suggests that society impacts the health of its members in many different ways, like when a person is treated differently because of the shade of their skin, the acne on it, the hair growing out of it, or the genitalia formed by it...

EXAMPLES

One Social Determinant of Health at a Time

"Nice tan!" is a compliment that boosts self esteem (which is healthy).

"Pizza-face!"...self-loathing turned depression and suicidality, anyone? (not so healthy)

EXTENDED EXAMPLES

Two Social Determinants of Health at Once

"Nice tan!  Ah man, and you look great in that bikini!" are two compliments, back-to-back, double pump on the self-esteem pump (still healthy, as long as we mind our moderation).

"Pizza-face fat-ass!" ...is a double pump on the verbal abuse feeds depression and suicidality pump.

(not so healthy ...x2? ...to the 2nd power?  ???  Definitely worse than one pump.)

ONE MORE EXAMPLE

Slightly more complex...

"You fat-ass nigger bitch!"
Rubber and glue?
Do you remember the rhyme us old-timers grew up with?
Turns out it was a load of bs.
Words hurt, too.
Not just physical and sexual abuse.
It all hurts.  Especially when it adds up.
